Jose Mourinho admits Manchester United lack ‘killers’ in front of goal and has indicated that he is likely to buy a striker this summer.
United are the lowest scorers among the Premier League’s top-seven clubs by some distance with 23 fewer goals than Liverpool – and even trail behind 13th-placed Bournemouth.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the club’s leading marksman with 27 in all competitions, and Mourinho questioned whether the rest of his squad are ‘in love with the goal’.
Juan Mata is United’s next highest scorer on 10, while Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba have seven apiece, and Wayne Rooney five.
Mourinho backed Rashford to come good again next season but insists that United need a poacher like former Old Trafford favourite Javier Hernandez who was allowed to join Bayer Leverkusen two years ago after a season on loan at Real Madrid. It’s understood there is no buy-back option.

‘We have some players that are not really players in love with the goal,’ said the United manager ahead of Sunday’s trip to bottom-of-the-table Sunderland.
‘They are good players, they are creative players, they can create, but naturally they are not the kind of guy that is a killer.
‘I give a simple example. In the way we play at Old Trafford, in the way we dominate opponents and the way we play in the box, I think Chicharito would have 20 goals easily.
‘Even coming from the bench for the last 10 or 20 minutes, he would have 20 goals. He is the guy that naturally the ball rebounds here, rebounds there. Boom! Goal.
‘The goalkeeper saves. Boom! Goal. The cross is coming, he anticipates the first post header. Goal.
‘We don’t score enough goals for the way we play and the teams that come to Old Trafford, they know that. They feel that and they defend.’
United have been linked with moves for Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez of Arsenal this summer.
Asked if he will buy a striker, Mourinho added: ‘Maybe, maybe.’
Rashford has only scored seven times in 39 appearances following his breakthrough season at United last year, and is without a Premier League goal since September.
But Mourinho is confident that the teenage England striker will continue to develop. He added: ‘What is clear is he’s having an amazing experience, which after the hurricane that was last season when he came in, is giving him a hell of an experience.
‘And because he is such a good boy, such a good professional, I believe this is a fantastic learning experience for him. Even not scoring goals, next season he will. Next season will be a good season for him. We believe in Marcus, that’s no doubt.’
