I moments ago came across a piece by Reno Omokri about BB Naija titled “BBNaija Isn’t there to entertain you. It‘s there to exploit you”
They put few youths in a house to engage in immorality just to win ₦85 million. 200 million Nigerians waste trillions of Naira voting.
Who is the real BBNaija winner? The organiser!
“Big Brother originated In Europe, and has died a natural death there. Europeans are now focused on reality shows like Deal or No Deal, and Dragon’s Den, that promote industry, while Nigeria is stuck in yesterday because of our love for debauchery!
“Other than Nigeria, which countries still do Big Brother? Research it. We are about the only one. The world has left the debauched show behind.
But not us. Rather than copy what brings progress, we like copying what breeds degeneracy in society!
I felt the need to do a rejoinder. First I’d like to say that Reno Wendell Simlin Omokri has no moral values to speak about morals, but that’s story for another day.
Looking at it critically:
Yes, the organizers laugh to the bank, but it’s not from the votes of viewers alone, they have sponsors, and yes it’s a business for them, one they intend to make a profit.
Secondly, the audience get entertained, and that’s satisfying for the audience. Entertainment comes in different forms BB Naija is one of these.
As for the contestants, yes according to religious standards, immorality is what thrives in there, as a matter of fact, the major reason why I’m not a fan is that the show teaches these guys nothing, but I understand the fact that not all shows will be educative, some will just be entertainment, and while there are reality shows that are entertaining and educative, like music shows, I’m still very much in touch with reality to understand that sex and “immorality” sells way more than any other thing.
What do the contestants gain after the show? There’s only one prize money, but these guys enjoy the kind of fame that only a show like BB Naija can offer them, they build a fan base and a cult of followers. If for nothing, that fame is a lot, and what they do with it after they leave the house is left to them. But the fact is that they enter the house unknown, yes they learn nothing asides learning to cohabit with people and also learn basic life essentials like how to manage humans, etc, they also leave the house as “Celebrities” because they become very famous.
Do i also need to remind us all that the entertainment industry in Nigeria is very massive and it keeps growing? An industry where these guys will definitely play in when they leave the house.
As for the other shows that Reno mentioned, that’s like comparing apples with bananas, there are educative shows in Nigeria. Dragons den was once active In Nigeria, at a time it was sponsored by UBA and MTN. We’ve also have/had The Titans and The Apprentice Africa
And contrary to his statement, Big Brother still held in Canada in 2020.
In conclusion, there are many shows on TV, there’s something for everyone to choose from. If Big Brother doesn’t appeal to you for whatever reason as maybe your moral stand or intellectual level, there are other shows on TV to watch.
Morality didn’t die today, BB Naija didn’t kill morality, there has been immorality from the days of the old testament in the Bible.
I forgot to add that morality is even subjective.
