In what seems like an attempt to scuttle the ongoing nationwide indefinite strike by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), health workers on the payroll of the Yobe State Government have opted out of the industrial action.
Reports say that the industrial action, which began on Tuesday midnight, is expected to be spontaneous nationwide.
However, members of the union in Yobe have shunned the directive as the state-owned health institutions are providing full services.
Services are being provided at the State Specialists Hospital and the Yobe Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.,
Mr Abdul-Azeez Usman, the state Chairman of National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANM), could not be reached for comments as he was said to be in a meeting.
But the strike has paralysed normal services at the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, Yobe, which is the only federal health institution in the state.
A senior staff of the hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the hospital is providing skeletal services as the strike commenced.
The staff said: “We are hopeful that the strike will not be prolonged and the union will soon call off the strike for normal services to resume”, cautioning that if the strike is prolonged, patients on admission and out-patients will be at the receiving end and called for a quick resolution of the dispute.
