#TosinadedaREVIEW: @Wizkidayo – Jaiye Jaiye ft @Femiakuti

Wizkid-Femi-Kuti-Jaiye-Jaiye-Art

Star boy wizkid despite all the EME saga has managed to do great things, first he signed Maleek Berry and then Legendury Beats to his Stay Boy label, Then some days ago he tweeted about a supposed track called “Jaiye Jaiye” ft the legendary afrobeat maestro: Femi Kuti.

We all (or should i say i personally) know wizkid to have a particular way of singing, and t be honest i was really getting tired of his usual lyrics and chants, because i believe he’s a bundle of talent. He really did surprise me when he did “Lagos to Soweto”, even tho it was still about the girls and stuff (can’t fault that, it’s his selling point), it was a new sound, and it was nice.

Just days ago, i listened to “Oluwa Lo Ni”, a track on his first album, and i thought to my self, when will Wizkid take a break from singing for the ladies and give us another joint like “Oluwa Lo ni”.  Like he knew my mind, he dropped “Jaiye Jaiye” few days ago, and that’s what this review is about.

Sarz on the beat as usual, did his thing and did it well, mid tempo beat, dance able, and has this afrobeat sound to it (We all know why). I kinda like the way he used piano and drums on the beat.

Jaiye Jaiye in English language means, living life to the fullest, so you can understand the message Wizkid tried to portray on the track. He talks a about how he moved from nothing to something, and how he wants to live life to the fullest  *Started from the bottom now we here* – In Drake’s voice.

“Arararara, Ororororo ooo, mo fe ko ile fun mama mi, mo fe ra ile fun baba mi, aye ni Miami, maserati fun iyawo mi, Ferrari versace, ferragamo buggati, owo lo dun to yi, mo fe lowo bi Adenuga . . . . you cannot believe what i have seen with my eyes, my people it is a beautiful story now”

The lyrics above well delivered on the beat, with Femi Kuti’s Sax at intervals, explains the whole aim of the song. Wizkid wants all the good things of life for himself, and his loved ones. He’s been through struggle, and it’s a good feeling to have passed through the struggle, and make it through music: “See i have fought through defeat and now i’m living a better life, and i’m thankful for the life that i’m living now”.

I like the chorus/hook, simple, catchy, groovy and conveys the message of the song too. The saxophone is more evident on the hook, which makes it even more melodious.

“Wizzy baby loke loke, sei Oluwa lo se o, owo wole wa, sebi Oluwa lo se o, Lagos today and London tomorrow, sebi Oluwa lo se o, omo jaiye jaiye, sebi Oluwa lo se o aaaah”

I’m at the top now, thanks to God (That sums up the whole chorus).

“Owo nla wole Amen, A kole mo ile Amen, Maserati Ferrari Amen, Ferragamo Buggati Amen”

The he delivered the lines above and chanted the Amen was kinda Afrobeat-like (You understand what i mean), Wizkid sounded like a Fela protege there, and the next part of the song is the Femi Kuti Saxophone display of Genius.

Wizkid starts of the with classic “Lady” chorus by the Abami Eda himself, Fela Anikulapo Kuti . . “If you call am woman, African woman no go gree, she go say i be lady o” fuses it into the chorus of Jaiye Jaiye, Sarz also does some stunts on the drums, and then Femi Kuti ends it all with the Saxophone, Blissful if you ask me, my best part of the song.

This song is different, new school sound afrobeat, and i like that fact, good song, great sound, message makes sense, and its groovy at the same time.

I rate it 8/10

  1. I think the Saxophone could have been better utilized. Wizkid’s lyrics were lost in the sound of the Saxophone. I found it hard separating the Saxophone from Wizkid’s voice…… A chorus with the Saxophone or a Solo would have done. I won’t give it an 8, I’d say 5.5/10.

  2. Wow!. Tosin you gave a song 8!. Wizkid for that matter. LOOOL. Even wizkid must be surprised. Hehe
